Petrov's Defense
When White's knight attacks e5, Black does not defend it and counterattacks e4 with ...Nf6. The position often becomes symmetrical and very solid.
Explanation
Game Moves
| # | White | Black |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | e4 | e5 |
| 2 | Nf3 | Nf6 |
Aim
Develop like White and reach equality early. Bring out the knights and bishops, castle, and play from a balanced position.
Watch out for
If White plays Nxe5, taking back on e4 at once is risky: after Qe2 the knight is attacked, and if it moves away, Nc6+ wins Black's queen. Kick the knight away with ...d6 first, then take on e4.
